Sporty sightseeing: Exploring Tobago by mountain bike
[Advertising due to linking] Besides a good portion of recreation, we would also like to see something of the destination during our holidays and do some sports. At home we like to jog through nature in front of our door, on Tobago we decide this year for a mountain bike tour. After some research we came across Eamon and Tobago Mountain Bike Tours. The provider has attracted attention with good reviews and left a good overall impression. Without a lot of cycling experience on the mountain bike across the Caribbean island – is that going well?
Planning and preparation: Uncomplicated and reliable
Contact via e-mail and Facebook worked smoothly and reliably for us. In addition to the date and time, we talked about our experience on the mountain bike (in our case: none) and our fitness (in our case: all right). Especially nice was the possibility to pick us up from our apartment in Buccoo by car and bring us back after the tour.
Good preparation is (almost) everything
Arrived at Eamon we are offered cold drinks and briefly discussed our expectations for the route. Since we already know some points on Tobago well, Eamon puts the tour specially so that we can also explore new areas. After the points have been clarified, we now go to the bikes, which all give a technically and visually good impression. At his house there is a well-equipped bicycle workshop, where smaller and larger repairs can be carried out directly on site. Now quickly put on the helmets and off you go.
The route – as varied as Tobago
The route is very varied and has offered many new impressions of Tobago. Asphalted roads, sandy paths as well as cross-country passages through gardens and backyards result in an interesting mix on a well mixed topography.
The way to the Atlantic for a well-deserved picnic break
A special highlight is undoubtedly the drive through unpaved terrain on a strip between the Atlantic coast and mangroves. At the beautiful Petit Trou Lagoon we finally have a nice picnic. Strengthened with watermelon, grapefruit and water, we make our way home over the Tobago Plantation site.
Windmills and caimans – typical Tobago !?
At one of the lakes there we can observe a caiman sunbathing and marvel at the diverse birdlife. Eamon has always allowed us to share his extensive knowledge of Tobago’s history, flora and nature. So this trip was not only sportive and entertaining, but also very instructive for us. We are amazed to see the remains of an old windmill from the time when Tobago was ruled by Dutch conquerors. Unbelievable, where our “neighbours” in the world left their footprints….
The sunset at the beach of Mount Irvine – simply a Dream
Shortly before the end of the tour we stop at the beach of Mount Irvine. This section is probably one of the most beautiful to experience a typical Caribbean sunset. Inspired by this impression we finally make our way to the finish line.
Conclusion: Much sweat and even more fun
Granted: The tour was a bit more exhausting than we had imagined before. But every drop of sweat was worth it and I was rewarded with a great experience. We are happy to have made this tour and spent a great afternoon with Eamon.
So if you are a bit sporty and interested in an impression off the beaten track, you should not miss this tour!
